Brenig fishing report

Llyn Brenig fishing report – week ending May 20th 2012.

A varied week of weather was experienced at Llyn Brenig this week. From misty, cool days with light Easterly winds with a bit of hail thrown in to warmer, milder weather with winds moving up from the South West. As I write this report there is a marked increase in the temperature and the sun is shining at last. We now hope for better days ahead although nothing is certain in this world. The water temperature has also risen to 10 degrees C and there is definitely more fish activity on the lakes surface. The best fishing for most of the week was achieved on a DI 5 sinking line but by the weekend there was some success using a floating line.

The lake was stocked on Tuesday and Wednesday with 1,000 fish and as a result there was some good fishing to be had provided you were able to locate the fish. The rod average for the week, based on the catch returns that are handed in, was 3.5 fish per angler. Amongst the fish that were caught there were some very good sized fish. A good number of fish over 3 lbs were recorded with Mr R. Houghton from Ruthin, who commented, ‘excellent fishing; brilliant fighting fish in superb condition’, landed a 3lb 8 oz Rainbow. However the biggest recorded fish goes to Mr M. Donagher from Corby who landed an impressive 4 lb 5 oz Rainbow using a Fritz. There were also some decent bag sizes as well with Mr D. Gilbert recording the top bag of 16 lbs 2oz. It is also interesting to note that a number of Brown Trout were caught this week which is always a good indication of the health of the lake.

A number of other fishermen have also commented positively on the state of the fishing at the Brenig  with Mr  Ron Mitchell writing ‘Great fighting fish, a great 5 hours fishing’ and Mr Storr-Barber from Penrhyn Bay commenting that the fish stock is of ‘good quality’. We are always grateful for the views of those that fish the lake.

The hot spots for boat fishing seemed to be similar to the previous week with Water Sports Bay, Sailing Club Bay and the end of the Brenig  Arm proving productive. The Coves along the East side of the lake were also fishing well. There was some successful bank fishing north of the Brenig Arm and also in Tower Bay.

Top flies of the week have been Diawl Bach, Orange Fritz, Black Dabbler, Montana, Gold Head Damsel, Buzzers, Cats whiskers and various Boobies.

Llyn Brenig can often be seen at its best in the late evening. As the sun begins to set invariably calmness descends upon the lake and a sense of peacefulness replaces what ever the day has brought. You will see the bird life take to the wing and glide across the still water and the only sounds are those of the natural world.  I urge all visitors to the Brenig to stay that little bit longer and enjoy the tranquillity of these glorious evenings.

May I remind all those that are interested in learning the art of fly fishing that there will be fly fishing lessons coming up on May  26th. Please contact the visitors centre for details on 01490 420463.
The main gates will be shutting at 8.30pm this week and all boats need to be back on the jetty by 8 pm.
